Why statement breaks matter
When you start ↕ Uploading data you need to think about how your text will be broken up into statements.
- If you are ↕ Uploading text files you can make manual breaks. Otherwise your text will be broken into paragraphs (Word files) or pages (PDF files).
- If you are ⬆ Uploading Excel files, each statement will be one row.
Usually, you will want your statements to be no shorter than a paragraph and no longer than a page or two.
- Don’t make your statements too short: All your causal coding is done within one statement. So if your statements are too short and you see a causal claim which involves more than one statement, you can’t easily do that (though there are workarounds, see 📝 Ellipses ).
- Don’t make your statements too long. Each statement is displayed in its entirety in the statement panel in the app, and you can select one or more statements for coding. If your statements are many pages of text, it will be harder to navigate between them and find out where you are.
